Connecting Users to their Road Network

NexusLRS Origin

Road Data Systems was created with the idea of connecting DOT workers with their road network or LRS as easily as possible. Any work an agency does is defined by where it’s at on the network, but viewing defining or sharing that network information in a way people can use was severely lacking.

Driving Idea behind NexusLRS

In highways unless the task is purely administrative basically anything you do has a strong geospatial component. The way we describe a location can vary widely. Mile points are objectively the best way to describe location from an engineering standpoint but in the field the only datum you may find is a MP sign / bridge. Even if you found a MP you have no idea which direction the road goes to, or how reference another point along it.

This yields field data like: “0.1 miles north of Fisher Chapel Church”, effectively establishing a LRS system that then has to be decoded to back in the office. To get MPs, we finally look at straight lines, establish directionality, and do some arithmetic. The complexity of that task is trivial, but the translation on both ends is done hundreds of times a day.

LRS is effectively a fancy way of saying mile point, we’ve had mile points since we’ve had roads, the problem isn’t that we can’t describe it, the problem is that we don’t have it at the times we actually need it the most. In this proposal I’ll discuss a framework for describing location that is universal regardless of the person, department, or application at hand.

Road Data System’s Culture

Technology Driven

Embracing technology as a strategic enabler and integrating it into various aspects of the RDS to gain a competitive advantage and meet the evolving needs of users. We advocate for using the best tool for the job but are also willing to try new unproven technologies.

Build

RDS has a culture of building implementations of software you would like use if it doesn’t exist. We are not afraid to try new things and realize some of them we will just throw away.

Ship

RDS currently ships two products NexusIO and NexusLRS a web map and a mobile map respectively. Those apps combined get over a thousand users a month and 1000+ hours of usage.

People First

The "People First" core value drives our decisions, actions, and culture. We believe that our customers are our most valuable asset, and we are committed to creating an environment where they can flourish both personally and professionally.

Customer Commitment

The unwavering focus on providing the best possible experience, satisfaction, and value to customers throughout their interactions with the company. Customer commitment involves establishing long-term relationships built on trust, understanding, and responsiveness.

Partnering for Excellence

To achieve excellence, we must go beyond our own capabilities and actively seek opportunities to collaborate with external stakeholders. We forge strategic alliances with organizations and industry partners who share our commitment to excellence.
